Obituary of Bruce S. Phelps

FOWLER - Bruce S. Phelps, age 69, of Fowler, passed away on January 30, 2014 in the Golden Living Nursing Home in Wilkes-Barre, PA where he has resided for the past month. There will be calling hours at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. His funeral service will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Beth Benham officiating. Burial will be in the Hailesboro Cemetery. Bruce was born on July 20, 1944 in Watertown to the late Ralph S. and Marion E. (Tuttle) Phelps. He attended schools in Sackets Harbor, Adams Center, Belleville and Indian River then earned his G.E.D. in the United States Navy. Bruce married Lucille Clarke on June 29, 1968 at the First United Methodist Church of Gouverneur with Rev. Stanley Brown officiating. The couple built their home on the Farm to Market Road in 1969, enjoying the work together. Bruce was a member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge for 37 years, and loved to hunt, fish, and putter in his shop. He spent most of his working career as a self employed carpenter and plumber. He had previously been a laborer for the St. Regis Paper Mill and St. Joseph Mineral Corp. His survivors include his wife, Lucille; his sons, Bruce A. Phelps and Charles S. Phelps; sister Lorraine B. Phelps; and a grandson, Jared S. Phelps. He is predeceased by his sisters, Eleanor M. Rose and Linda L. Looker.
