Obituary of Elizabeth J. Chambers

OSWEGATCHIE- Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Chambers, also known as "Granny" to many, age 78, of Oswegatchie, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Betty was born on January 18, 1936 in Ogdensburg, a daughter of the late William and Lucy (Barber) Johnston. She grew up in Ogdensburg and graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy. She married William "Pete" H. Chambers on March 26, 1954 in Moss Point (or Biloxi) Mississippi. The couple lived in Gouverneur for many years before moving to Oswegatchie in 1985. The couple greatly enjoyed traveling and camping with their motor home and spending time with their family. Mr. Chambers died on April 30, 2008. Mrs. Chambers worked as a nurse's aid for E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur for several years before caring for state hospital patients in her own home in Gouverneur for 17 years. She is the former manager of the Gouverneur Neighborhood Center and she also enjoyed working on puzzles and crocheting. Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law; Mrs. Paul (Chris M.) Martin of Oswegatchie and Mrs. Larry (Barbara Ellan) Johnson of Port Deposit, MD; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. William and Donna Chambers of Gouverneur and Mr. Robert A. and Wanda Chambers of Pulaski, NY; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Irene Kelly of Albany, Peggy and Larry Denny of Ogdensburg, Beverly and Melvin "Coke" Perry of Ogdensburg, Barbara and Glenn Fuller of Star Lake and Donna and Fred Bennett of Ogdensburg. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty is predeceased by a brother-in-law, George Kelly. There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Oswegatchie Cemetery with Pastor Roger Benjamin of the Oswegatchie Baptist Church officiating.
