Obituary of Delbert E. Devendorf

GOUVERNEUR – Delbert E. Devendorf, age 86, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at home under the care of his loving family, many caregivers and Hospice. There will be a private graveside service in the Pleasant Lake Cemetery, Macomb. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Delbert was born on January 25, 1928 in Macomb to the late William and Anna (Smith) Devendorf. He attended the Gouverneur High School. Mr. Devendorf served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to the Heavy Mortar Company 8th Infantry Regiment and served from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1952. He received the Army of Occupation Medal, Germany. Delbert married Rachel W. Wainwright on July 27, 1963 at the home of Carl and Bedorah Wells officiated by Rev. Frank Brown. Rachel passed away on March 7, 2004. Delbert worked as the Assistant Mechanical Superintendant for the St. Joe Mineral Corporation, retiring in 1986 after 34 years. He was a member of the Silas Wainwright VFW and Gouverneur American Legion. His survivors include two brothers, Donald Devendorf, Edwin Devendorf; three sisters, Dorothy McIntyre, Shirley Clarke and Ruth Haggard. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him. He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Rachel and two sisters, Beverly Rice and Anna Devendorf.
