GOUVERNEUR- Mary "Alice" Nicholas, age 86, of Gouverneur, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Calling hours for Alice will be on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Her funeral service will be on Saturday, January 31st at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Stephen Rocker of the St. James Catholic Church officiating. Alice was born on July 30, 1928 in Ogdensburg, NY to the late Star Morley and Florence LaMay. She attended school in Ogdensburg. She worked as a nurse's aid at various places, then, she stayed home and raised her ten children. In her younger years, Alice played the guitar and sang at the Wegatchie Hotel. That is where she met her husband Richard. She and Richard married on April 22, 1955. In 1996 the couple renewed their vows. Richard passed away on December 7, 2000.
Alice used to enjoy playing shuffle board and square dancing. She also enjoyed knitting, collecting Christmas Villages, going to bingo, traveling to various places and taking care of her flower garden. She also enjoyed camping with her family.
Surviving are five sons, Edgar "Butch" Gagnon of Phoenix, AZ, Ronald and Kathy Nicholas of Gouverneur, Anthony and Lyuba Nicholas of Seattle, WA, Richard "Dicky" Nicholas of Gouverneur and Kenneth Nicholas of Gouverneur; two daughters and their husbands, Paula and Ronald Wood and Kathy and Michael Knowlton all of Gouverneur; two daughters-in-law, Sue-Lynn Gagnon and Sherri Nicholas; six brothers, Clarence and Mary Gagnon, George Gagnon, John and Mabel Gagnon, Francis Gagnon, Victor Gagnon and William Gagnon; five sisters, Virginia and Joe Gardiner, Lillian and Tom Pray, Elizabeth and Frank LaLonde, Antoinette and Clifford Hooper and Margarite Adam and her companion William Mason; 34 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Alice is predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Nicholas; two sons, Edward Gagnon and John Nicholas; a daughter, Shirley Horton and two grandsons and a great granddaughter.
