I usually called Matthew a couple of times a year. We were Shipmates on the USS Richard E. BYRD. After we were discharged from the Navy, we kept in touch frequently and during the time I was living and working in West Yellowstone, Mt he came out to
visit and stayed with me for about a week. He also visited me while I was working and
living in San Diego. I visited him when he was working in Burlington, Vt., and after he had retired we met at a restaurant for a meal. This meeting was wonderful as I had just been to our Shipmate Reunion and we were able to relive so many memories of our time and friends on the ship. I was calling him today 8/9/2015, and got the message that the phone had been disconnected.. After short research and letting a couple of our shipmates know of the phone disconnect, one of them located his obituary and sent the information to me. I am so happy that I was able to be Matthew's friend for over 50 years. Rest in Peace and God Bless you.
