Obituary of Evah A. Foster

RUSSELL – Evah A. Foster, age 97, of Russell, passed away on May 29, 2019 at her son's home in Hannawa Falls under the care of her family. In keeping with Evah's wishes there will be no calling hours. There will be a private burial in the South Russell Cemetery. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Edwards. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. Evah Arline Cook was born on September 6, 1921 in Hermon to the late Harley B. and Mable (Ellwood) Cook. She was the first daughter and third oldest of her siblings: Floyd, Raymond, Robert, George, Doris, Shirley, Phyllis and Mavis. She graduated from Knox Memorial High School in Russell in 1939. Evah married Earl H. Foster on June 8, 1939 at the Canton Episcopal Parsonage by Rector Ward. The couple lived in Russell for their entire marriage. Earl passed away on February 1, 1996. Mrs. Foster was the Cafeteria Supervisor for the Knox Memorial High School until it closed and for Edwards-Knox Central School until her retirement in 1990 after 34 years of service to the schools. Always active in her community, not much went on in her town that she wasn't a part of. Evah served on the Russell Town Board, founded and was President of the Russell Atwater Housing, and President of the Russell Activity Board. She served on the St Lawrence County Advisory Board for the Dept. of the Office of the Aging as well as the County Council of Senior Citizens. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Russell Fire Dept, and NY Grange # 891. Evah was recognized many times for her commitment to her community including NYS Assembly, St. Lawrence County and most recently as a NYS Woman of Distinction by Senator Patty Richie. Evah's favorite times were spent creating memories with friends and family, especially playing cards or meeting for a meal. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Charles E. and Mary Sue Foster; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
