Obituary of Delbert "Sam" T. Martin

GOUVERNEUR - Delbert "Sam" T. Martin, age 92, of Gouverneur, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the E.J. Noble Hospital. There will be a graveside service with military honors held in the Harrisville Cemetery on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Guy LaMothe officiating. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Sam was born on April 15, 1921 in Harrisville to the late Delbert and Blanche (Waugh) Martin. He attended school in Harrisville and served in the United States Army during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Sam served as a radio operator, serving in Burma India. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and the WWII Victory Medal. Sam retired as a truck driver for Harmer Construction. He had also drove a cement truck for Tomlinson Brothers for many years, worked in the mines for St. Joe Mineral Corp. and had worked on the railroad in the Harrisville area. Sam loved his cat, Mitzy, loved to fish and to spend time with friends at the American Legion. He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the VFW. A marriage to Lila Mashaw ended in separation. He is predeceased by his longtime companion, Helena Washburn; his brother, Robert Martin; and his sister, Edna Cole. He is survived by his daughter, Linda R. and Bernard Jesmer of Harrisville; three granddaughters, Heather and Rusty Tuttle, Crystal and Matthew Adams, Carrie and Liam Mantooth; and eight great-grandchildren.
