I am still in shock since Sunday when I learned that my long-time best friend back east, Mike Wicks, passed away suddenly. Mike not only was my best man when Patti and I got married, but we were in a few local bands that played in the Northern New York area in the late 1970’s. Mike was mainly a bass player but also did vocals and composed his own music. Of all the musicians I have met and played with over the years, Mike was the most creative and adaptive one that didn’t read music. He had an “ear” for music which is a gift that you can’t learn…it was instinctive to him to play or sing what he heard in his mind. That was very rare to experience in my travels. After I moved away and on in my musical career, we didn’t stay in touch much until Patti passed away 2013. Interesting how some human event can bring people back together and we regained that connection we once had, just like we never had been apart all those years…it's what good friends do. Wixy and I talked about anything at any time of the day, and I live in Alaska...talk about memories past and present and made plans for future reunions with other members of the bands we were in. His sense of humor was second to none (ask any former "Feather" band member about the gig in Moose Jaw, Alaska) and he always had something positive to say no matter what the issue. I was always amazed at his musical creativity which came from his heart and a dam good bass player. We shared the same birthday which was always a good laugh every year. I’m sure, Patti has shown him where to set up. I will miss him dearly…Wixy, you will not be forgotten. My heart goes out to family and friends from the Great White North, Alaska. ❤

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. It's been a few years since we had spoke (back in Clayton at the waterfront concert with Messenger) but it was great to see him and glad to know he was still going strong with his music. I have many memories of the times we spent together with the Marshall Street Band and even back in high school. He lived just down the street from me for a time and I guess one of the funniest things I can recall is the time we painted his beloved Camaro a chocolate brown with my $25.00 paint sprayer - he loved it and it even looked better when he goth "Chicago" put on it. I will never forget the time I had to drive him to our New Year's Eve job in Clayon when he didn't have a car - I think I got back to Watertown about 5 a.m. We had lots of good times together as we played together at 2 different times through the the years - My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family.

Although it has been a long time since I last had contact with Mike, I frequently am reminded of the many great adventures that our dad's took us on when we were young. We hunted, fished and camped out and among other things, drank a lot of coffee. From Clayton Center to Grindstone Island and places in between, I will always think of our good times. GOD bless the family and thanks for the memories Mike.

Just a few memories of some good times I shared with Mike.
Mike was a good friend and a hard worker. He did have his moods at times as we all do, but he was always available to his friends and would never let his friends struggle. He would always do what he could to help.
One night, Mike was playing in a band at Alex Bay. It was a great night until we got lost on the way back to Gouverneur. Needless to say, I had enough beer in me and Mike had had enough Ripple. Mike was sure he knew a short cut back. It wasn't much of a short cut as it took us three hours to get back to Gouverneur!
We held an Agway employees get together one summer at my house. I was rehabilitating 5 baby raccoons. One of their favorite foods was marshmallows. Mike decided he would try to pick one up like you would a cat .Apparently, raccoons don't really care for this as the raccoon bit Mike on the finger. For two weeks, we had Mike convinced that he had contracted rabies!! He started researching rabies and spent quite a bit of time doing his research. By the time he finished, he realized that if he had actually had rabies, he would have already been sick!
Hope you all have good memories of Mike. I know I will cherish the ones I have had. He will definitely be missed.
